Un’ottantina di ragazzi extraparlamentari, durante una manifestazione antifranchista, divisi in tre gruppi si dirigono verso l’ambasciata spagnola scagliando una decina di molotov e si danno alla fuga per la scalinata di Trinità dei Monti e per la salita di San Sebastianello.
Superato un primo momento di sorpresa le forze dell’ordine reagiscono sparando. L’allarme viene diffuso a tutte le volanti della città; una di esse, per la precisione una “Campagnola” della Celere che si trovava in via Sistina, si mette all’inseguimento di un gruppetto di manifestanti che giungevano dalla salita di San Sebastianello sul viale di Trinità dei Monti.
Un celerino rincorre un manifestante, Luigi De Angelis, contro il quale spara un colpo di pistola, ferendolo; l’altro agente si avventa verso un secondo giovane in fuga e (secondo quanto confermato da una prima perizia) spara anch’egli almeno due colpi.
Durante questa “guerriglia urbana” Mario Marotta, ingegnere di 52 anni, viene colpito a morte, mentre passeggiava con la fidanzata lungo il viale che porta a Trinità dei Monti, zona Pincio: morirà all’istante.
Mario Marotta era fratello del tenente dei carabinieri Aldo Marotta, in servizio presso il Ministero della Difesa.
Roma, 15 marzo 1976 – ANSA: L’autopsia compiuta sul corpo della vittima, disposta dal sostituto procuratore Rossini che svolge l’inchiesta per l’uccisione dell’ingegnere mario Marotta, ha consentito di stabilire che l’uomo è stato ucciso da un proiettile calibro 7,65 penetrato nella tempia destra e fermatosi poco prima dell’osso parietale sinistro, percorrendo un tragitto pressoché orizzontale.
Questo calibro è lo stesso dei proiettili che hanno ferito Luigi De Angelis, presunto attentatore, contro il quale ha sparato l’agente Lucio Lucentini. Il sostituto procuratore Rossini al momento dell’interrogatorio all’agente ha formulato l’ipotesi che si sia reso responsabile del reato di omicidio colposo. L’agente ha detto al magistrato di aver sparato cinque colpi di pistola, due contro il giovane de Angelis in fuga che, a suo giudizio, stava per lanciargli contro una bottiglia incendiaria, e gli altri in aria.
