Negli anni 70 il territorio lecchese era già erra di ‘ndrangheta, l’embrione di quello che le sentenze ci diranno qualche anno dopo, che aveva deciso di stabilire lì il centro dei propri affari e iniziava ad imporsi con ferocia.
Pierantonio era un operaio impegnato nell’ attività sindacale, una moglie, tre figli e tanti sogni da realizzare.
La sera del 5 settembre 1976 è al Circolo Il Farfallino, nel rione Castello a Lecco in occasione del festival dell’unità, evento irrinunciabile per quegli anni e per chi come lui aveva deciso da che parte stare.
È una bella serata di festa, da passare in allegria con i compagni.
Ma qualcuno ha deciso che quella bella atmosfera andasse rovinata. E così un gruppo di ragazzotti inizia a dar fastidio ai presenti, provocandoli con arroganza.
Pierantonio, sempre attento al rispetto degli altri, li redarguisce bonariamente e torna alla sua serata con la famiglia e gli amici.
È frazione di un secondo, le provocazioni diventano offese e Pierantonio è accerchiato. Schiaffi, calci, un pugno violentissimo allo stomaco e Pierantonio è in terra, morirà poco dopo.
Su alcuni giornali dell’epoca il suo brutale assassinio fu liquidato con il titolo: “ucciso a botte operaio comunista” e per quasi quarant’anni a Lecco Pierantonio è stato “il fratello dell’attore Castelnuovo che è stato ucciso in una zuffa”. Null’altro.
Poi arrivano le indagini sulla ‘ndrangheta a Lecco, le condanne al sanguinario clan dei Coco Trovato e i primi collaboratori di giustizia. E il nome di Pierantonio è nero su bianco nelle confessioni di un sicario del clan : Pierantonio Castelnuovo è stato ucciso per dimostrare la violenza e la ferocia di cui i Coco Trovato erano capaci.
Erano in sei attorno a Pierantonio ma il pugno fatale fu scagliato da Angelo Musolino, all’epoca non ancora ventenne, fratello del boss Vincenzo e cognato di Franco Coco Trovato.

It’s a fraction of a second, the provocations become offended and Pierantonio is encerced. Slaps, kicks, a very violent punch in the stomach and Pierantonio is on the ground, he will die shortly after.
In some newspapers of the time his brutal assassination was dismissed with the title: ‘communist worker beaten to death’ and for almost forty years in Lecco Pierantonio he was ‘the brother of the actor Castelnuovo who was killed in a fight’. Nothing else.
Then come the investigations on the ‘ndrangheta in Lecco, the convictions to the bloodthirsty Coco Trovato clan and the first collaborators of justice. And Pierantonio’s name is black and white in the confessions of a clan hitman: Pierantonio Castelnuovo was killed to demonstrate the violence and ferocity of which the Coco Trovato were capable.
There were six of them around Pierantonio but the fatal fist was thrown by Angelo Musolino, at the time not yet twenty years old, brother of the boss Vincenzo and brother-in-law of Franco Coco Trovato.
