Era il 30 giugno del 1977 quando il metronotte Remo Petroni nel suo giro quotidiano in via Moreni, notando una Simca ferma con tre giovani, (componenti del Fronte della Gioventù) che armeggiavano in maniera sospetta dentro l’auto, si avvicinò per un controllo.
I tre, che stavano preparando una bomba, scapparono e Remo fu freddato mentre li rincorreva per le strade del quartiere. La guardia riuscì a parlare via radio con la sede dell’Argo, storica società di vigilanza della città, dando così l’allarme. Gli assassini furono subito presi grazie all’auto abbandonata sul posto
Due giorni dopo si tennero i funerali in santissima Annunziata, in una chiesa stracolma di persone alla presenza del sindaco Elio Gabbuggiani e del Gonfalone della Città. Un cuscino di rose bianche fu deposto sulla bara dal figlio di due anni Davide, accompagnato da Antonella, la madre, vedova appena ventenne di Remo. Al termine della cerimonia si formò un corteo spontaneo che percorse le strade del centro fino a Piazza Duomo.
