Antonio Santoro, maresciallo comandante degli agenti di custodia del carcere di Udine, fu ucciso nel capoluogo friulano verso le 7 del 6 giugno 1978. Ad agire fu un commando di militanti dei Proletari Armati per il Comunismo (PAC). Il gruppo, nato dalla frantumazione dell’area militante di “Rosso”, intorno alla leadership del veronese Arrigo Cavallina, si specializzava su temi legati al carcere e al comando sociale.
L’agguato fu teso da un giovane che aspettava Santoro all’uscita di casa. Per non destare sospetti, il giovane fingeva effusioni amorose con una ragazza. Appena Santoro si avvicinò, il giovane gli sparò alle spalle con tre colpi di revolver Glisenti 10.35×20, un’arma ormai antica e fuori produzione da inizio secolo. Il volantino di rivendicazione, intitolato “Contro i lager di Stato”, affermava che l’istituzione carceraria doveva essere distrutta in quanto strumento di annientamento del proletariato prigioniero.
Secondo la sentenza passata in giudicato, gli autori materiali dell’omicidio furono Cesare Battisti, che sparò personalmente i tre colpi, Enrica Migliorati, che recitava il ruolo della fidanzata, Claudio Lavazza e Pietro Mutti (quest’ultimo pentito), che attesero sull’auto della fuga parcheggiata a breve distanza. Arrigo Cavallina, Sebastiano Masala e Luigi Bergamin furono invece condannati come organizzatori dell’omicidio e responsabili della diffusione dei volantini di rivendicazione.

The convictions
The PACs blame Santoro for violence on detainees and abuses of power. For the latter crime he had been tried and acquitted together with 8 seconds of the Udine prison. Arrigo Cavallina and Cesare Battisti had been detained here. The marshal had only returned to duty the day before because he had been injured in a fight with a prisoner.
The material perpetrators of the Santoro murder, according to the sentence that has become final, are Cesare Battisti, who personally fired the three revolver shots, his fake girlfriend Enrica Migliorati, as well as Claudio Lavazza and Pietro Mutti (the latter repentant) who were left waiting in the escape car, parked a short distance away.
As competitors in the Santoro murder, the sentence that has become final, also condemns Arrigo Cavallina, Sebastiano Masala and Luigi Bergamin. The first two are dissociated and admitting, the third has found refuge in Paris. For the Court, the three organized the crime and handled the claim, printing and distributing the leaflets.
