Fu ucciso il 9 Novembre da due terroristi delle Brigate Rosse in via Giuseppe Donati, nel quartiere romano di Casal Bruciato.
La guardia Granato, al termine del servizio, stava accompagnando a casa la propria fidanzata. Mentre il poliziotto e la ragazza stavano entrando nell’edificio alle loro spalle giunsero due terroristi, un uomo ed una donna che aprirono il fuoco con due pistole, una calibro 7,65 e una 38 Special. Mentre Granato cadeva a terra la fidanzata si gettò su di lui per proteggerlo. La terrorista la scostò bruscamente urlandole “Levati di mezzo! Non ce l’abbiamo con te! Non c’entri tu!” per poi esplodere un colpo di pistola alla testa di Granato, ormai morente. I due terroristi fuggirono quindi immediatamente dopo.
Granato apparteneva alla Squadra di Polizia Giudiziaria del Commissariato San Lorenzo, della quale era uno dei membri più apprezzati, svolgendo anche indagini sull’estremismo politico di sinistra.
Michele Granato avrebbe dovuto sposarsi un mese dopo. Gli assassini (ndr: tra cui Roberta cappelli, non estradata dalla Francia nel 2021) vennero arrestati negli anni successivi e furono condannati a pesanti pene detentive.

Michele Granato, 24 years old, Police Officer
He was killed on November 9 by two terrorists of the Red Brigades in via Giuseppe Donati, in the Roman district of Casal Bruciato.
Officer Granato, at the end of his shift, was escorting his girlfriend home. While the policeman and the girl were entering the building, two terrorists, a man and a woman, arrived behind them and opened fire with two pistols, a 7.65 caliber and a 38 Special. As Granato fell to the ground, his girlfriend threw herself on top of him to protect him. The female terrorist abruptly pushed her away, shouting, “Get out of the way! We’re not after you! You’re not involved!” and then fired a shot to Granato’s head, who was already dying. The two terrorists then fled immediately afterward.
Granato belonged to the Judicial Police Team of the San Lorenzo Police Station, of which he was one of the most esteemed members, also conducting investigations into left-wing political extremism.
Michele Granato was supposed to get married a month later. The murderers (note: including Roberta Cappelli, not extradited from France in 2021) were arrested in the following years and were sentenced to heavy prison terms.
